The Australian Federal Government is getting stricter on business owners to make sure consumer data does not get into the wrong hands. Businesses are 100% liable with website security and any breach comes with big penalties — for businesses covered by the Privacy Act, this can mean fines of $50 million, 30% of annual turnover, or 3x the benefit obtained from the breach, whichever is greater. Even outside that, breach costs, reputational damage, and lost customer trust hit every business regardless of size.
